Scuba Diving in Cape Cod
While most people tend to think of seafood and long beaches when they think of New England, vacationers should think about scuba diving in Cape Cod.
Divers will discover that there is a lot to explore within the Cape Cod area. In fact, there are so many great diving spots that it’s hard to name them all. Below, you will find some of the most popular scuba diving in Cape Cod sites. You may also want to note that most of these sites are within tourist areas, which means that there are plenty of hotels and resorts to select from while planning your New England diving vacation.
Airplane Wreck is a fun site to visit if you enjoy exploring different wrecks. Near Corporation Beach in Dennis, a Douglas AD-3 Skyraider sits waiting for you to explore it. The pilot of this plane had to jump out of the craft before it crashed in order to save his life. Though the pilot did escape unscathed, the plane did not fare so well. When the plane was originally discovered it still had all of its original parts…though most of those parts have been stolen. Still, the plane makes quite an interesting dive. This plane wreck can be found at 35 feet.
Another great wreck to explore is the Henry Endicott. The Henry Endicott was once an impressive 191 foot wooden schooner barge. Unfortunately, this barge sank on September 19, 1939. When the barge sank it was carrying a steam locomotive, though the locomotive is now a large pile of rust (still interesting to look at). The dive itself is a dark one, since the barge sits at nearly 90 feet, so bring lots of light. Divers will see large paving stones that were once part of the ship’s cargo. Scuba diving in Cape Cod will also allow you to visit the wreck of the Commerant.
Since this large wooden fishing boat has been under water for some time now, it is entirely fragile. Still, divers will discover goose fish, flounder, skate fish, cod, and many other fish in and around the wreck itself.
There are lots of things to explore when it comes to scuba diving in Cape Cod. Grab that underwater camera and a dry suit, this part of the world is filled with wrecks, fish, and lots of colorful sea life.
